Veterans Memorial Highway

Council Bluffs, Iowa

Chroma Design prepared the streetscape master plan and construction documents for the beautification of this important five-mile state highway corridor. The streetscape design addresses the urban and rural sections of the roadway separately providing each with distinctive patterns and colors intended to visually tie the planted roadway edges with the center median. Street trees and wide planted frontages enhance the businesses in the urban sections. Medians are edged with red concrete and richly planted with hardy shrubs, ornamental grasses, and flowering perennials to add year-round visual interest. Half-scale City Gateway Monuments with color changing LED lights are located at key roadway intersections. Signature stone, trail bridges are located at drainageway crossings along the adjacent bicycle trail. The form and materials for the walls and towers match those used on the City’s west gateway.
