UNK East Gateway

Kearney, Nebraska

Chroma Design’s team prepared a landscape master plan for the University of Nebraska at Kearney (UNK); a document that now guides development throughout the main campus.  One of the plan’s primary design drivers is to develop a new memorable arrival experience for visitors and create a consistent and attractive image statement about the campus. Our east gateway concept plan has been developed with this in mind. Coordination meetings with UNK, The City of Kearney, and the Nebraska Dept. of Transportation led to acceptance of the design recommendation to create a formal campus gateway at the intersection of 9th Avenue and Highway 30, with a circular drop off area, a new parking lot, a UNK identity wall, campus threshold columns, public art, dramatic night lighting, a richly planted landscape, and pedestrian pathways to link the campus with the surrounding community. Implementation of the plan will proceed as the surrounding road network is improved.
