Stapleton Bridges
Denver, Colorado
Bridge aesthetics were a priority for the Stapleton Development Corporation. Doug Lamson, as EDAW’s project manager, worked closely with selected experts and led the preparation of a master plan that established the architectural expression and design vocabulary for the finish appearance of each bridge to be located in Denver’s Stapleton neighborhoods south of Interstate 70. His team followed through with the designs, preparing construction documents and administering construction for the finish treatments on each structure. Aesthetic enhancements for bridges on primary roadways included public art, specialty lighting, and limestone-clad abutments. Secondary roadway bridges were given related forms fabricated from less costly materials. Custom-designed handrails, pedestrian walkways and overlooks, and thematic landscapes tied the structures to their surroundings and ensured they would be places for people to enjoy and remember.
