South Crater Road Gateway

Prince George, Virginia

Since 2014, Chroma Design has led four ‘Southside’ Virginia municipalities and a private foundation through the design of four new community gateways. Prince George County requested gateway improvements to stimulate economic development at a once popular hospitality district off the South Crater Road exit from Interstate 95. Colonial garden spires were the design inspiration for a pair of 47-foot tall steel and blue glass features that flank the roadway creating a threshold to the commercial destinations. Color changing LED lights visually activate the spires at night. Twenty evenly spaced groupings of English Oaks flank each side of the exit ramp emphasizing the vehicular procession up to the gateway intersection.
