Artist Jun Kaneko conceptually designed an art space and garden for the Mid-America Arena and Convention Center in Council Bluffs Iowa. The 20,000 square foot black and white granite-paved plaza contain 16 vertical ceramic “dango” sculptures, two art tile walls, and three heroic-sized bronze “heads.” It is enhanced with planted islands, granite seat walls, and theatrical night lighting. The new space is a significant contributor to the art enrichment of this major public facility and to the citywide public art program implemented by the Iowa West Foundation. Chroma Design revised and completed construction document started by another firm. We researched materials and installation options, prepared the construction plans, details, and specifications, and oversaw construction. Our objectives were to assure the highest quality landscape and lighting, and to keep maintenance costs low while fulfilling Mr. Kaneko’s Vision.
