West Broadway Viaduct

Council Bluffs, Iowa

The West Broadway Viaduct in downtown Council Bluffs is highlighted in the EDAW’s West Broadway Corridor Master Plan as the “Ceremonial Gateway to Downtown” and a prime location for significant public art. Doug Lamson directed the preparation of that master plan in 2001, and when a new viaduct was planned in 2011, Chroma Design was selected to prepare a streetscape design for the threshold areas leading up to the bridge as well as theatrical lighting for artist Ed Carpenter’s “Gateway” sculpture. The plan includes a continuous multi-use trail; the rehabilitation of a public pocket park as a trailhead and meeting-place; ornamental street and bridge lighting, street trees, ornamental plantings, brick paving, and landscaped medians. The design was prepared and implemented in close coordination with the City of Council Bluffs, and the Iowa Department of Transportation.
